Tooth Scaling and Polishing
Plaque is a sticky colorless film of bacteria that is constantly forming on the tooth surface. The bacteria release acids that attack tooth enamel. Repeated attacks can cause the enamel to break down eventually, resulting in cavities.
It begins to form on teeth 4-12 hours after brushing. That is why it is important to brush at least twice a day and floss daily. Plaque that is not removed with thorough daily brushing and cleaning between teeth can eventually harden into calculus or tartar.
Tartar or calculus, is a crusty deposit that can trap stains on the teeth and cause discoloration. It creates a strong bond that can only be removed by a dental professional.
Brushing and cleaning between teeth becomes more difficult when tartar collects above the gum line. The gum tissue can become irritated and inflamed. Gums may become swollen or bleed. This is called gingivitis, the early stage of Periodontal (Gum) disease.
